Kilnsitter Upgrade Service

Hampered by the restrictions of a kilnsitter? unable to have adjustable controlled heating and cooling ramps, for glass and ceramics. Have you got a small Top or Front loading kiln of 3Kw (13A or less) fitted with a 13A U.K. plug? Why not upgrade to a multi-program, multi-ramp ST222 controller. Stafford Instruments can supply you with a ST222 controller and thermocouple and cabling to acheive a DIY (Do it yourself upgrade). Its simple just carry out the following steps.

Ordering Procedure:

  • Closely examine your kiln, look for a vent hole or inspection hole of a minimum of 12mm diameter that can be used for placing the themocouple into the firing chamber through the kiln outer wall. The position of the hole ideally needs to be between 2/3 rds and 3/4's of the way up from the bottom of the firing chamber floor. Measure the thickness of the kiln wall at this appropriate point, from the outside metal case, to the inner firebrick face and add 1.5" or 36mm to this measurement. Make a note of this measurement. When you order your upgrade kit via the BUY IT NOW buttons below, enter this measurement in the note section on the Customer Data page. If there isn't a suitable hole you will have to carefully drill a 12mm hole through the case of the kiln - and through the firebrick, to allow a thermocouple to be inserted, taking great care not to damage the heating elements.

  • Ensure that your kiln has a 13A Pluged Mains plug on a flying cable that fits into a 13A Wall socket.

There are 2 ordering options with different themocouple lengths when ordering through the website:

Option 1
ST222 complete kit with Industrial Head Thermocouple for kilns with a thermocouple requirement of length up to 6" or 150mm.

Option 2
ST222 complete kit with Industrial Head Thermocouple for kilns with a thermocouple requirement of length up to 9" or 225mm.

Fitting the Kit:
The controllers 13A mains lead is plugged into the 13A wall socket. The Kilns 13A mains lead is plugged into the 13A socket on the front face of the controller. At the left hand end of the controller is a miniature thermocouple socket. The supplied thermocouple is placed through a suitable hole in the kiln wall and its flange is affixed to the kiln wall by 3x self tapping screws. The flying lead from the thermocouple is plugged into the miniature thermocouple socket at the left hand side of the controller. Controller installation is now completed.

First Firing:
Rotate the Kilnsitters / Auto sitters energy regulator, Ramp rate knob to maximum. Set a Max Firing time greater than the programmed time, and place a milibar / cone in the kilnsitter to a cone value slightly higher than the max temperature set in any ramp set in the programmer. By doing this you don not have to carry out any wiring alterations internally to the auto sitter / kilnsitter, but you still retain the added advantages of a secondary over time / over temperature trip facility afforded by the kilnsitter.

Program the controller as described in the user manual and fire having the benefit of controlled heating and cooling ramps.
