Thermocouples

Stafford Instruments manufacture a wide range of thermocouples suitable for pottery and ceramics, glass and Raku Kilns. We are able to supply replacement thermocouples for the majority of kilns. We manufacture thermocouples for some of the best known kiln manufacturers. Whether your kiln be a well known brand or self built we can supply you with a quality replacement thermocouple. Match your thermocouple requirements by clicking on the images below. These four types; Bracket Head, Flange Head, Industrial Head and Labhead are the Standard Head types. On mouse clicking on the image of a particular type you will be taken to a specific page with further options and a shopping cart.

FAQ.

What is a thermocouple?

A thermocouple is an electrical transducer. It produces a voltage dependent upon the heat it measures. This voltage output is fed to the temperature controller where it is analysed and acted upon to provide heating, cooling, or soaking as part of the controller program, or as an indication of the current kiln temperature.

Why are there different types of design of thermocouples?

Over years differing designs have evolved for different kiln design and construction. There are advantages and disadvantages of most of the designs. If you are looking for a replacement for your existing thermocouple then browse through the different sections under the thermocouple main heading and find the type that is similar to your needs. Most kiln manufacturers have a design(s) that they use.

Why are there differnt element types "R", "S", "K" etc?

The different types are mainly used for differing criteria. For example "K" type are only suitable for temperatures up to 1000 degrees Centigrade - this makes them suitable for glass work as kiln temperatures do not need to go above 1000 degrees Centigrade. They are made of elements constructed of nickel and chrome. These metals are relatively inexpensive and so in general "K" type element thermocouples are robust, relatively inexpensive and eminently suitable for glass kilns.

For Kilns that are to be worked up to 1350 Degrees Centigrade"R" and "S" type themocouples are used as they can withstand the higher temperatures. In order to do this they have elements made out of precious metals Rhodium and Platinum. By nature precious metals are expensive and so the relative cost of these types of thermocouples is greater.

The majority of UK built kilns designed for pottery and ceramic firing use "R" type thermocouples. An exception to the rule is Cromartie who use both "R" and "S" types. The majority of European built kilns use "S" type.
